No cash for City Hall and flood projects

THE LEADER of Angus Council has confirmed two major projects which have caused much debate in Brechin over the years have been put on hold until the necessary funding becomes available.

Councillor Iain Gaul reported on a shortfall of some £45.264 million - a shortfall which has resulted in the refurbishment of Brechin City Hall being put on the back burner. He put on record the tight budget restraints facing the SNP administration and listed a number of inevitable casualties.

In an unprecedented move, the leader talked through the projects which are on course to be completed, but outlined those which would not progress due to a shortfall of £45.264 million. Some £89.570 million was needed for projected projects in the capital plan, which included almost £19 million of legally committed expenditure. Almost £10 million was needed for statutory obligations as well as almost £12 million council support for the Brechin High School replacement, and some £10.565 million for the Arbroath Schools project. Over £21 million is needed for core maintenance projects, including roads maintenance works.

For the two major projects in Brechin, he confirmed the £4.215 million flood prevention scheme was unaffordable without a Scottish Government grant, and the £1 million refurbishment of Brechin City Hall was now a “low priority” which would take place in later years.
