October marks Guide Dog week
DO SOMETHING different during Guide Dogs Week 2012 and step into the world of the blind and partially sighted in Scotland.
During Guide Dogs’ annual awareness and fund-raising week from October 6 to 14, a series of events will be held throughout Scotland, encouraging people to take on a challenge blindfold.
There will be a series of events such as a walk on the Royal Mile at Glamis Castle near Forfar on Saturday, October 13.
The aim of the week is to help more people understand what issues blind and partially sighted people have to overcome on a daily basis to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.
Members of the public will be encouraged to try sighted guiding walks, blindfold walks with dogs and short handle walks. There will also be interactive tasks with simulation spectacles.
Colin Gallagher, the mobility team manager for Edinburgh, said: “Blind and partially sighted people overcome extraordinary challenges everyday to live independently and do the things that the rest of us take for granted.”
