Planning Brechin’s Christmas switch on

Following the huge success of “Switch on Brechin” the organisers are now looking to find out how they can improve on this success.

The Brechin Christmas Lights Appeal committee, a volunteer group consisting of members of the RoundTable, 41 Club, Inner Wheel, Guildry, Civic Trust, Gardner Memorial Church, the Mechanic’s Institute, Caledonian Railway, Brechin Business Association, Brechin High School and local councillors have been working together since 2003 and with the help of community donations have been lighting up Brechin each Christmas.

Last year the Retailers joined together with the committee making the event bigger and better than before with the general feedback being good.

Over 400 people went to St Ninian’s Square to watch the switch-on of the lights.

To improve on this year’s light switch on the committee would like to hear your views on what you would like.

A spokesperson for the committee said: “This year we need to update some of lights and we hope to have more lights in the centre of the town.”

In previous years Angus Council provided Brechin with two Christmas trees, however last year, and from now on, Brechin will only be given one tree from the council which will be located a the High Street.

“For the past few years the switch-on has taken place at St Ninian’s Square with stalls, music and Santa. However, we are no longer provided with a Christmas tree by Angus Council for the Square. Last year we were fortunate that Councillor Bob Myles donated a tree for the square.

“This year Angus Council will continue to provide a tree in the High Street so because of this we are asking if people are happy having the venue for the light switch-on at St Ninian’s Square or would you rather the switch-on was moved to the High Street?

“The date for this year’s switch in will be Saturday, December 8 and it has been suggested that we bring the time forward from 6 pm to 4 pm. What do you think?”

The committee are looking for suggestions and input from the people of Brechin on how to improve the event including the format of the day.

If you have any ideas or thoughts about the day let the Lights committee know by emailing BrechinLights@aol.com or by letting us know how you feel on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/thebrechinadvertiser
