Prince nips in to Brechin Distillery

PRINCE Andrew was given an insight into the whisky-distilling process and the sterling efforts made by a local company as they try and make further progress in overseas markets last week.

The Prince's visit to the county's only remaining working distillery at Glencadam gave him an opportunity to see a company that has not only adopted to a world-wide recession, but has taken one of the country's oldest products and led it into previously uncharted waters with the creation of new products.

Tania Hillman, who along with her brother Aaron, is co-owner of Glencadam, had flown up from London to be present in Brechin, despite a dislocated toe in plaster.

She said: "We are very pleased with Glencadam from a production point of view and very proud of our whisky."

The Hillman family have invested heavily in Brechin. A new blending centre being added to the existing operation.

However, plans to almost double the work force with an expansion at the Brechin Business Park have been put on hold because the market hasn't been as buoyant as had been expected.

In 2008 a planning application was submitted to build 16 warehouses at the business park, as scope for expansion on the Glencadam site is limited.

Mrs Hillman said when the company considered these proposals there was a lot of talk of whisky exports expanding particularly in India and China, but the market hadn't experienced the levels of growth in these areas as was forecast.

There are 22,500 casks stored on site, dating back to 1978. The distillery itself dates back to 1825.
