Rare visitor makes its way to the Craig Pool
WELL I have just missed the last month of the salmon season, stuck in Ninewells watching the Tay flow past and thinking of all my mates enjoying themselves on the South Esk and in particular the Westie.
I must first of all thank all of my fishing friends for their visits, cards and good wishes, which went to prove what I have always said, fishers are the among the best people in the world - and by the way I will be back in the new season, keener than ever.
On my first day home from the first of my confinements I had a call from an angling club member excited to tell me that there was a seal in the Craig Pool below the Brechin Sewage Works. He had followed it upstream from the Kinnaird dam. I thought it was the wake from the biggest salmon ever to come up the river and got very excited and had a few casts in its direction.
Just imagine if you had foul hooked it, you are a lucky man. He followed it up the shallows of the hirst at the bottom of the Craig Pool.
A few days later it was seen at the Image Bridge by an estate worker and then it was quiet for a few days before it turned up at Finavon where it was photographed by well known local angler Derek Strachan.
He was not sure what he was seeing as the water was quite high. He thought it was a very big fish and it was only when he gained the high ground overlooking the pool that was he able to see what it was. This was followed by a sighting at Inshewan and I have just heard it is now just below Cortachy Castle.
Fisheries Board Administrator Dr Marshall Halliday said that he had never heard of such a journey by a seal in the Esks. It was quite a common feature on Canterland on the North Esk and on Kinnaird on the South Esk, indeed in my younger days when I lived on the riverbank at Kinnaird it was something I saw on a few occasions. Just what will happen to this wanderer I will be following closely and will let you know in the future.
The Angling Club held their presentation last Friday evening in the Bridgend Lounge, when Jock Craig was presented with his fourteenth Championship Trophy. This goes to prove another of my beliefs, that in the sport of angling you are always improving despite advancing years. Well done Jock.
