Sad farewell to Gardner minister

MEMBERS of Gardner Memorial Church recently bid farewell to Minister, Moira Herkes who played a huge part in the lives of many Brechiners.

Moira recently had to give up her post due to ill health and the church and wider community were keen to mark the occasion

Presbytery Clerk, Donald Macintyre, paid tribute to the minister: "Moira has made such a contribution to the local community in recent years that it's difficult to put into just a few words.

"She introduced to Gardner Memorial Church an early morning service, which was a very popular one. It was a more informal service of worship, which lasted some 45 minutes.

"Moira never used notes for this service but wandered about amongst us and you always felt she was talking to you on a one-to-one basis.

"Very rarely did she use notes for her 11am service either, but it always came across with sincerity and passion. Whatever the chosen subjected matter was.

Look beyond

"Moira Herkes always taught us to look beyond the walls of our church and outwith the boundaries of Brechin. In 2005 it started with the tsunami disaster, then Sri Lanka and the Asian earthquake. In monetary terms we raised in a very short period in excess of 4000 towards these causes.

"Moira asked for blankets and warm clothes one Sunday morning to fill a transit van. Such was her enthusiasm for the project, the two transit vans turned into two 7.5 ton trucks such was Moira's enthusiasm and leadership.

"She was chaplain to Andover School and spent many happy hours with the children. She was also a Justice of the Peace and was in demand to witness signatures or perform the many varied duties of a JP.

"I know that had her health allowed it, she was to become more involved in Brechin Area Partnership.

"Everyone at the Gardner and I know in the wider community in Brechin are all sorry to see her depart.

"Moira will always have a place in the hearts of those she met and befriended in the area and we wish her and her family well for the future."
