Search for pics with focus on the Picts

THE hunt is on for the top photographers in Angus!

The Angus Pictish Trail Photo Competition, which runs until Friday, August 6, is looking for the best photographs of the ancient artefacts left behind by the Picts, the mysterious warrior people who lived in and around the Angus area nearly two thousand years ago.

The competition has been organised by Pictavia to celebrate the new Angus Pictish Trail leaflet, which provides a guide to the many Pictish sites found across the county.

"We're looking for photos which capture the Pictish past of Angus, such as museum exhibits, standing stones or ancient battlefields," said Jennifer Sharp of Pictavia, the visitor centre on the outskirts of Brechin which is dedicated to the Picts.

Photographs should be submitted to Pictavia by 5 pm on Friday August 6, either digitally (photo files can be emailed to pictavia@angus.gov.uk) or as prints.

Only one entry per person will be accepted, photos will be judged by a panel of independent experts, and entries will be split into three age categories: 8-12 years, 13-17 years and 18 years and over.

The winning entries will be displayed at Pictavia during August and September 2010, and each winner will receive book tokens and a framed print of their winning photograph. Full details and terms and conditions are available at www.pictavia.org.uk.

"This competition is an excellent opportunity for budding and experienced photographers, whether they live in Angus or are visiting the area, to test their camera skills by photographing some of the oldest and most interesting historical relics in the county," said Jennifer.

"Using the Pictish Trail detailed in our new leaflet to find the best Pictish sites is also a great way to discover the hidden history of some of the first people to live here."
