Support for all-weather facility gathering pace
THE MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife has thrown his weight behind a campaign to re-develop an a concrete football pitch in Brechin - as the duo behind the slammed rival politicians for only piping up at election time.
Labour MSP John Park, who himself is a member of the Scottish Parliament football team and regularly plays five-a-side matches, came to visit the pitch at Brechin Leisure Centre last week and met Gregor Laing and Dave Todd, who are dismayed at the lack of users at the court.
Mr Park expressed his desire to turn it into an all-weather facility and said that he would try to find out as much as he could about the pitch so that something could be developed which would suit the majority of folk in the town.
However, his initial thoughts were to re-lay the surface as astro turf.
"Basically, I am going to try and get as much information as possible because a facility like this, which is still new, should be used," he said.
"The most logical thing to me is to develop this facility so that people can use it, and my first thought would be to put down astro-turf for people to use.
"That way it could be quite easily used for five-a-side football going across the pitch or seven-a-side using the whole pitch.
"If something like this was to be built anywhere in the country now, tarmac would not be used, it would be astro-turf.
"What I need to do now is speak to people locally myself and get instruction on what they want.
"It would be great if this could be transformed into somewhere that encourages people to come down and use it and maybe even provide Brechin City with the stars of the future!"
Dave and Gregor said that John is the first politician to give the scheme their backing, except when they are looking to be re-elected.
"Gregor and I have been pushing this but haven't once had the support of any councillor - except when they are knocking on doors at election time," said Dave.
"There are people who have jumped on the bandwagon, but we really feel that we have been let down.
Gregor said: "Down here you have got changing rooms and with all the trees that surround it you couldn't get a healthier spot.
"I come down here almost every day just to keep an eye on the situation and the pitch is never used.
"There is flood lights, brick work round the outside, the whole lot, but it is never used. It just makes me sick."
