Telephone scam warning
Angus Council trading standards service is warning of a new telephone scam reported recently in Angus where false claims of debt are made.
A resident received a telephone call from unknown caller telling her that she would be taken to court over an unpaid debt of £10,000. The resident informed the caller that she did not have any debt, at which point the caller gave her telephone numbers to contact people who could assist her with her debt. The resident ended the call and notified the appropriate authorities.
Another current scam takes the form of people receiving text messages telling them to contact a person on a telephone number provided, giving the impression that the call is important. The consumer telephones the number only to discover that the purpose of the call is to sign up the person up for a loan.
Anyone receiving such calls or messages should not respond but contact trading standards for advice through the council’s ACCESSLine on 08452 777 778. Advice on loans or other money matters can be obtained from the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, banks, or independent financial advisers.
