The PlayTalkRead tour in Angus

THE PlayTalkRead campaign which aims to encourage parents and carers to play, talk and read more with their young children will be visiting towns in Angus this week on a bespoke bus.

The bus was at Brechin Leisure Centre on Monday, Arbroath Leisure Centre on Tuesday and is at Academy Medical Centre in Forfar on Wednesday (today).

This is the first time the “Have Fun From Day One” tour has visited Angus.

Research shows that children develop up to 50% of their language skills before they are aged three and parents can help develop this through simple and fun interactions from the first day of your baby’s life.

The team on the bus provide Bookbug and play sessions and give lots of ideas, hints and tips to take home to help enrich family time with storytelling, rhymes and songs and by demonstrating that often the best play ideas don’t cost a penny – a bottle could be a rocket or add some rice and it’s a musical shaker. Kids love using their imagination!

The one-stop website www.playtalkread.org has fun, free tips to support you to play, talk and read more with your child, and an on-line community where you can register to chat with other parents, share tips, advice, photos and much, much more.

Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, said at the launch of the bus tour:

“Playing, talking and reading more with our children can greatly enhance their development while also providing great opportunities for parents to bond with their wee ones.”

There is evidence that prioritising intervention during the early years of children’s lives will cut the long-term costs incurred in terms of ill-health, poor education and criminal activity.

Many of society’s big issues can be traced back to childhood and the PlayTalkRead roadshow is part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to continued early support for parents.
