The Quay makes a very good first impression

First impressions are everything and The Quay in Montrose certainly make a good impression from the start with their food, as their bread basket to tempt you while you peruse the menu is full of delicious doughy home-made bread.

For my starter I chose the soup of the day, which was a comforting bowl of sweet potato soup with a hint of chilli, into which I happily dunked more of their fresh rosemary bread.

My fiancé chose the chicken liver pate with home-made red onion marmalade and Devenick Dairy oatcakes. He said the pate was smooth and flavoursome and the marmalade complemented it well.

And if you run out of oatcakes, the pate is also tasty smothered on The Quay’s home-made bread.

I chose the chicken breast stuffed with sage and onion, served with sautéed cabbage and homemade potato croquettes, which were crunchy on the outside yet smooth and creamy on the inside.

The chicken was tender and the stuffing added another dimension to the dish.

The gravy was flavoursome, and that’s one way to win a Yorkshire girl’s heart (and stomach) - a delicious-tasting gravy.

My fiancé had the steak, which he happily demolished.

For pudding I had a de-constructed lemon meringue pie, which was a lovely way to end the meal.

My partner chose the creamy raspberry cranachan cheesecake with a generous helping of Aberlour whisky.

The restaurant has a good choice of wines, beers and even a cocktail menu. To accompany my meal I had a rich and fruity red wine from the Languedoc region of France, which I was disappointed to find isn’t available in supermarkets. I guess I’ll just have to go back to The Quay for another glass.

We were very impressed with the menu and would definitely go back again.

To kick-off spring, The Quay is launching a new menu this week, celebrating seasonal produce, such as asparagus.

The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday for both lunch and dinner sittings and offers Sunday lunches from 12 noon to 2.30 p.m. every weekend.
