Thought for the Week

People all over the world pray for many things and at many times.

I know Christian minsters try desperately to get folk to slow enough to pray to God. But I suspect there is a bit too much truth to the joke I once heard: A minister dies and, resplendent in his clerical collar and colourful robes, waits in line at the Pearly Gates. Just ahead of him is a guy dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans.

Saint Peter addresses this guy: “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?”

The guy replies: “I’m Joe Green, taxi-driver, of Noo Yawk City.”

Saint Peter consults his list, smiles and says to the taxi-driver, “Take this silken robe and golden staff, and enter into the Kingdom.”

So the taxi-driver enters Heaven with his robe and staff, and the minister is next in line.

Without being asked, he proclaims: “I am Charles Jones, head minister of St. Peters for the last forty-three years.”

Saint Peter consults his list and says: “Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

“Just a minute,” says the minister, “That man was a taxi-driver, and you issued him a silken robe and golden staff. But I get wood and cotton. How can this be?”
“Up here, we go by results,” says Saint Peter.

“While you preached, people slept—while he drove, people prayed.”

Truth is the Bible tells us that “people ought always to pray.”

It should be the source of our spiritual power in life.

As a community of Christians locally we will join with people from around the area on Friday, March 1 to pray.

My prayer is that we pray more because we desire to talk to God than that we are scared not to.

But either way my hope is we learn to pray.

So come join in at the Cathedral Hall at 7 p.m., for World Day of Prayer.

I look forward to this every year and enjoy the time of prayer and fellowship we have.

This year the theme is very true to my heart as it is “I was a stranger and you welcomed me...”

Truth is we are all strangers in our own way, but the Christian community we have here in Brechin should be welcoming.

Praying,

Rev. Jon Bergen
