Two local sports clubs under threat?

MEMBERS and former members of both Brechin Cricket Club and Brechin Junior Rugby Club have been urged to attend an event in the Brechin Cricket Club social club on Thursday, January 28 at 7.30 pm.

The very existence of both organisations could be put under threat by the bar facilities being under-utilised, one of the major problems being experienced by the Brechin Cricket Club.

Brechin Cricket Club chairman, Arthur Paton, urged all of both club's members to ensure they pop along on the evening in question to a specially arranged extraordinary general meeting, where he is hopeful that a clear way forward can be found.

"We really need as many current and ex-members as possible to attended the EGM and support the club.

"The club itself doesn't owe money to anyone and is in reasonable shape, but we have to ensure that its being utilised on a more regular basis and we hope the EGM may highlight some of the issues that are preventing people from using the club.

"That's why we really need a good turn out on Thursday, January 28 and a real-cross section of people who may have stopped coming, who perhaps still use the club or who have just a passing interest. I would urge them all to attend."

One of the problems facing the club is that, in the hopefully unlikely event that it was to close, the ground has to be left in the condition the club took it over in - with the present social club demolished, the ground thereabouts landscaped and a new area of fencing in place to cover the area, presently taken up by the boundaries of the existing social club. That is an expense that would be beyond the means of BCC.

Brechin Cricket Club has played at Guthrie Park for the past century, the ground having been gifted to the town by the former Provost Guthrie.

In 2006, the club were joined by the Brechin Junior Rugby Club, who utilise the facilities in the winter.

The clubs now pay an annual four-figure annual rental to Angus Council for use of the ground.
