Visible bins placed at litter hot-spots

THE hard work carried out by Brechin and Area Partnership, Brechin High School and Angus Council finally paid off last week with the arrival of highly visible litter bins, which will be placed at various destinations in and around the city centre.

St David Street and the area outside Somerfield are just two of the areas which will benefit from the introduction of the new litter bins and Brechin and Area Partnership chairman Jim Milne was very keen to highlight the role played by senior pupils at Brechin High School in their introduction.

"There will be a number of bins located around the centre of the town," he commented.

"They will close to what have been identified by the pupils as hot-spots where a lot of litter is dropped at lunch-times.

"The bins situated in the centre of the town, which are now surplus, will be moved to Dovewells Drive and Mountskip Road, so the intention is that every street to and from the lunch-time eating and gathering spots is covered.

"The intention is that all the routes should have adequate bin facilities, with the older ones being recycled on routes closer to the school.

"The idea of the new bins being placed in the town centre underlines the fact the school and the partnership have been working together on what is an important local issue.

"Nobody has hidden from the fact there is a litter issue and all credit to Brechin High School, the Rector and the pupils for tackling the issue head-on and actually doing something about it.

"The message is clear; now they are there use them. I also can't think of a better destination to get people educated on civic pride than in the school.

"It has to start there. Hopefully, the adults will also learn from the pupils.

"We should also make it very clear that the pupils aren't the only ones who drop litter in and around the town centre, so it's up to us all to play our part in using what's been provided and keeping all areas of the town clean and tidy."

The provision of the bins follows on from a detailed and highly graphic presentation by the High School pupils to a previous meeting of the Brechin and Area Partnership which highlighted the areas they wished to target and as Jim said, its now up to members of the public - of all ages - to ensure the bins are used.
