Vision for town kirk’s future put on show

Any room at the church: A vision for Gardner Memorial's future may say the church expanded due to growing numbers.

Any room at the church: A vision for Gardner Memorial's future may say the church expanded due to growing numbers.

Garner Memorial Church could soon get an upgrade which will keep the best of the old and introduce the most practical of the new.

Mary Liddiard of the Gardner Memorial Church said: “The church celebrated its centenary just before the millennium and since then it has become increasingly clear that the church buildings cannot accommodate all the activities taking place.

“It is not just that the church is bursting at the seams; it is more that the space available does not suit the needs of the 21st century congregation.

“Having become more and ore aware of these pressures the Kirk Session commissioned the architectural firm F.E. Stephen in Glamis to carry out a feasibility study with a view to making the premises fit for the needs of a present day congregation.

“The firm has now come up with proposals which will keep the best of the old and introduce the most practical of the new.”

The congregation will have the opportunity to see these proposals when they are put on display at the morning service on Sunday.

“Not only do these plans deal with the needs of a worshipping congregation but they provide solutions to lesser, but necessary, needs such as access, storage and toilet facilities,” continued Mary.

“It must be emphasised that, at this stage, this is only a vision for the future. But, these are ideas with significant possibilities and of great interest to all members who cannot but be impressed with the imaginative proposals that have been designed with every effort to retain the beauty and character of the church.”
