Where are all the salmon?
A lack of salmon is causing concern on the banks of the South Esk.
All areas of the river are reporting the same thing, where are the salmon and on some lower beats they have not seen one for several weeks.
The Grilse (one sea winter fish) are also very late, usually appearing in late June, but in the last few days there are varying reports of one or two being caught, a mix of the thin emaciated fish of last season and much better fitter fish obviously from a different feeding area.
The worrying lack of seatrout of the last three years seems to have been left behind and sport is being enjoyed on all the Kinnaird beats, most mid river and some upper beats where as a Cortachy they have had good sport with double figure weeks.
The North Esk has slowed considerably but here again seatrout have been the saviour with Stracathro and Pert reporting good sport but also this beat continues to produce salmon with fish to T. Johanson and J. Peterson from Sweden while George Carr from Stonehaven had three and C. Sandground who returned all three he hooked in the boat pool.
Well known local (Laurencekirk) angler Eric Greig took his son Aaron out for some instruction in the art of seatrout fishing and ended up with a red face when Greig Jnr. produced two lovely fish on a small orange double. Perhaps Eric will be claiming that it is in the breeding and that he has passed on the required genes.
Game Fair
The Game fair at Scone Palace was an outstanding success and if you did not get there, well you missed something special. The quality of the casting demonstrations led by Ally Gowans was to be wondered at and Fishermans Row was a Mecca for all.
I picked up a few "bargains" and met fellow Brechin Angling Club member Morris Howitt being encouraged by his lady wife to buy a new rod, there is a message there for all your wives.
It was an occasion to meet many well known names from the south and to press harder for the reforms we all know are needed within the game fishing in Scotland.
It was also pleasing to see S.A.N.A. supporting the petition for the returning of the river Garry to it's previous stream and not just the scar it is on the highland scene.
S.A.N.A. were well represented by Ronnie Picken (Chairman) Ian Caldcott (Chairman of Migratory Fish Committee) and several other of high office.
