Young athletes are cashing in

THE youngsters at a local club will soon 'sport' some natty new running vests after they were awarded the monthly Mackie Motors sponsorship cheque for December.

Brechin High Athletic Club has been running for only a short time but already attracts about 40 members a week on a regular basis, despite winter being a quieter time of year for the club.

"We are hoping as we become better known this number will grow. It can only be good for the youngsters of Brechin," said Natalie McIntosh, the club's treasurer

"We train at Brechin High School, who give us the facilities free of charge. At present we are running with volunteers and the goodwill of everyone involved," she added.

The Mackies cheque helps the club towards its goal of buying some 4000 worth of equipment - a sum which it has come closer to reaching through the likes of the Mackies cash, some help from local Rotarians, and surprisingly successful campaigns to gather Tesco's sports vouchers.

"I had the pleasure of accepting a cheque on behalf of the club at a rotary evening in July where I and two young athletes were made most welcome," Natalie continued.

"Having now done more sums we realise that our bill for equipment is going to come in at around 4000.

"It will be hard work for us to come up with this but we are hopeful with some fundraising and a little luck in time we will be fully equipped.

"We've also been saving up Tesco tokens. Twice a year they do sports equipment or computers for schools. We've worked out that the vouchers we've received from people in the local community means that they have spent over 50,000 on food to help us out - it's quite phenomenal," she added.

The club runs at Brechin High School on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm. Anyone from eight-years-old up to seniors can take part, and everyone is welcome to pop along.

The athletes are busiest during the summer, but do take part in a number of events during the winter months as well - including some cross-country races.

The club is affiliated to Scottish Athletics and had also been accepted onto the Petrofac league, meaning access to more competitions in the future.
