When Brechin City Football club announced that Kay Hutcheon was the winner of their photo competition, they had no idea that it would spark international news coverage.
However, when a television news station in Malta discovered the story, via the Brechin Advertiser website, that is exactly what happened.
Reporters from the TV station interviewed Sisters Christine and Lillian Borg, who are Cloistral Nuns from the Jerosolimitan Order at the Monastery of St. Ursola, Valletta in Malta, about their role in the competition. The Sisters were not yet aware that Kay had been successful, but were delighted to learn that they had helped her secure victory. Kay, who always visits the Sisters when she is in Malta, had planned on keeping her win a surprise until after her day out, hoping to announce the news to the Sisters in the form of photographs from her day at the Brechin Castle Garden Centre and Glebe Park.
Kay was able to enter the competition after the club announced they were to extend the entry time, and it was with the contest in the mind that she packed the Brechin City top for their trip to Malta.
The interview with the Sisters, which originally aired on October 21, proved so popular, that the interview was aired again the following evening.
