OFFICIAL OPENING OF NEW LOOK AIRLIE PRIMARY SCHOOL
THE new look Airlie Primary School was officially opened on Friday. The Victorian building has been given a £1.45 million makeover by Angus Council to provide a school fit for the 21st century.
The new extended and renovated school has capacity for 75 pupils and includes two new classrooms, new toilets/cloakrooms, a refurbished gym hall, and a new kitchen.
Sustainability and energy saving measures have also been incorporated, including use of natural lighting, thermal insulation, the installation of a biomass boiler and external timber cladding.
During the renovation project, which started in May 2008 and was completed in February 2009, pupils and staff were decanted to Newtyle Primary School.
Thanking pupils, parents and staff for their support during the building project, education convener Peter Nield said: "I am delighted that Airlie Primary has been officially opened and that pupils are enjoying their modern new school.
"The council will continue to invest in schools across the county to ensure that our pupils are educated in fit for purpose buildings."
Head teacher Fiona Hislop said: "Everyone is very proud of our new school and its facilities. We will continue to provide the best opportunities for our pupils, firmly embedding the qualities that will be so necessary for the future as effective, confident, successful and responsible citizens."
