The Angus Strathspey & Reel Society is holding a Fiddlers’ Rally at the Webster Memorial Theatre in Arbroath on Saturday, April 19.

The society, which is formed predominantly of fiddle players, will be joined on stage by other musicians from all over Scotland to perform a wide variety of traditional tunes from slow airs to reels.

The society was formed in 1963 by Angus Cameron of Kirriemuir and is very well regarded in Scottish music circles. The leader of the orchestra is Lindsay Downie and the conductor is Frank Robb.

Joining members on stage are Robert Lovie, Maggie Findlay, Maggie Adamson and Brian Nicholson.

Robert Lovie is a very accomplished singer and story teller who will compere the concert. Robert is a property manager with the NTS at Fyvie Castle and has recorded many CDs and DVDs as well as performing on TV and radio.

He is well known as a compere at many highland games events including the annual Braemar gathering along with Robbie Shepherd.

Maggie Finlay is from Carnoustie and is a superb singer who has appeared with the society on many occasions.

Maggie has performed with Carnoustie Musical Society, Angus Minstrels and the Arbroath Male Voice Choir.

She recently recorded a CD with the proceeds going towards Alzheimer Scotland Angus Services, Maggie’s favourite charity.

Maggie Adamson and Brian Nicholson are from Shetland and have been playing as a duo for five years. They play a variety of different styles of music from the traditional Shetland tunes to rags, Scottish hornpipes, Strathspeys and swing. They have played many festivals including Celtic Connections, Gosport, Stonehaven, Shetland and Orkney. They have also been guest artists at many fiddle and accordion clubs.

They have played as far afield as Australia, Norway and America. Maggie has held the titles of Oban Fiddle Master and been Glenfiddich champion twice, while Brian is acknowledged as one of Shetland’s foremost guitarists.

Many skilled and ‘weel kent’ fiddlers have sat in the ranks of the Angus Strathspey & Reel Society. The orchestra has stayed with tradition allowing only stringed instruments and is one of the few orchestras which does not include accordions. There have been some outstanding performers, who became well known on the Scottish Traditional Music scene throughout the country. Tickets are available from the Webster Memorial Theatre Box office on 01241 435800.
