New book tells the story of Angus's role in wartime aviation

An Angus author has released a new book bringing together stories of the county’s military past.

‘The Lost Airfields of Angus’ is Margaret Bowman’s first non-fiction book and it provides a comprehensive historical account of the military airfields that played a vital role in the First and Second World Wars.

Its publication follows three years of extensive research and compiling personal recollections, and the book examines the sites primarily used for training young pilots in night flying, deck landing and torpedo training, as well as providing essential coastal defence. Related sites in Dundee and Aberdeenshire are also included due to their proximity, with fascinating historical links. While in development, the book received awards from the Scottish Association of Writers in 2020 and 2021.

Margaret is an award-winning writer and a member of the Society of Authors. She is also vice-president and press secretary of Angus Writers’ Circle and its representative to the Scottish Association of Writers, secretary for Tay Writers, Dundee and press secretary for the Friends of Carnoustie and District Heritage Group. She is now researching her next book, the ‘Wartime Defences of the Tay Estuary’.
