A special event to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day when the Second World War ended in Europe will take place in Angus next month.
Organised by Legion Scotland, the event will be held in Forfar on Saturday, May 9, at Station Park and Forfar Farmington FC’s ground and will feature military bands, re-enactment groups, a fly past from a replica Spitfire and activities for children.
There will also be special recognition during the day for all Second World War veterans.
The day will conclude with a spectacular Beating Retreat, starting at 7 p.m. This will provide time to reflect and commemorate the brave efforts of those both at home and overseas who, through their combined endeavours and sacrifices, achieved victory in Europe 70 years ago.
Legion Scotland is calling on local veterans or close relatives of those who served, to share their memories of that significant day in 1945 as part of its ‘Voices of Veterans’ campaign.
A selection of the stories will be featured in the charity’s online archive, as a tribute to Scotland’s heroes, which will be launched later this year.
Charlie Brown, Legion Scotland’s marketing and planning committee chairman said the organisation has worked tirelessly to create a major commemorative event in Scotland for VE Day.
He added: “We welcome everyone from near and far, and if we can collect a few more memories of that day in ’45, then it will be all the more special.”
Kevin Gray MM, CEO of Legion Scotland, also said VE Day was one of the most significant of the 20th century and in the history of conflict.
He continued: “This is a moment of immense relief and joy, of knowing that one of the most devastating conflicts mankind had known was at an end.
“Now in this anniversary year, we are keen to find people with memories of that eventful day, so we can record them for posterity and share the meaning of that poignant turning point in our history with future generations.”
Anyone with a story to tell about their VE Day experiences can record their memories at www.legionscotland.org.uk/news-events/voices-of-veterans/ or send them, marked ‘VE Day memories’ to: Legion Scotland, New Haig House, Logie Green Road, Edinburgh EH7 4HQ or call 0131 550 1549.
