Housing grants welcomed

Angus Council’s Neighbourhood Services Convenor Councillor Donald Morrison welcomed the Scottish Government’s boost to new affordable house building in Scotland.

The Scottish Government announced an increase in the amount of grant which can be claimed by councils and Housing Associations to help with building affordable houses to rent.

Housing Associations can now claim between £58,000 and £72,000 per unit and councils between £46,000 and £50,000 per unit.

An additional sum of £712,000 for Angus Council between 2012 and 2015 was also announced, which will be used to develop additional affordable housing for a range of needs.

Commenting on the news Councillor Morrison said: “This is fantastic news. The Scottish Government has listened to the housing movement and responded positively with both higher grant rates and more money. This will hopefully encourage greater numbers of affordable homes to be built and also provide a welcome boost to our construction industry.”
