Memorial to mark 40th anniversary of tragedy

A memorial service is set to take place in the grounds of Woodlands Garden at RM Condor to mark the 40th anniversary of the death two marines.

The service is set to be held on Sunday, August 10, with the official service scheduled to start at 10.30 a.m.

The service is to remember Corporal Dennis Leach and Marine Michael (Mickey) Southern who were killed in action during an emergency tour to South Armagh in July 1974.

The duo were part of a 45 Commando Group Royal Marines deployment to the area and on August 13, on a feature called Drummuckavall, just outside Crossmaglen, South Armagh, the IRA detonated a landmine which killed the two marines from Yankee Company.

Dennis was aged 24, while Mickey was just 19.

Steve Nicoll, explained: “The Commanding Officer of 45 Commando Royal Marines has given his permission for the memorial service to be held in the grounds of Woodlands Garden on Sunday, August 10, with refreshments available in the gardens from 10 a.m. and with the service starting at 10.30 a.m.

“Any former member of 45 Commando Group Royal Marine who wishes to attend must register in advance of the service and comply with the necessary security requirements of RM Condor.
