Angus MP Mike Weir met with campaigners from various organisations who are campaigning for a Tax Dodging Bill and gave his support to the campaign.
The campaign is supported by voluntary organisations such as ActionAidUK, Christian Aid and Oxfam and many other national and international organisations.
Commenting on the matter Mr Weir said: “At a time when we are suffering from seemingly endless austerity in the UK it is high time that the UK government took strong action to ensure that all tax due should be paid.
No one knows for certain the full extent of tax dodging but it is estimated that the UK loses billions of pounds to corporate tax dodging, whilst developing countries lose an estimated $160billion a year. Concern is justified by a National Audit Office report that confirms more than 400 of the 800 largest businesses in the UK paid less than £10 million in corporation tax in 2012/13, and around 160 paid no corporation tax at all.
“Not all companies are dodging tax, of course, and some are speaking out against tax avoidance, such as Scottish and Southern Energy, the first FTSE 100 company to be awarded the Fair Tax mark. We do, however, need to ensure that no company is able to dodge taxes.”
