Angus MP Mike Weir has called upon his constituents to ensure that they are taking advantage of any free help and support available with energy bills.

Speaking after the launch of Scottish Gas’ winter campaign at Westminster, he said: “The cost of energy is a worry for most constituents and with the onset of winter many are concerned as to whether they can keep their homes adequately heated. There are a number of simple steps that every constituent should take to make sure that they are doing all that they can to keep their bills down and their home warm.”

Mr Weir cited various schemes that could be on offer to Angus residents. Some may be entitled to extra support from the government and their energy supplier if they meet certain criteria. For example, many Scottish Gas customers last year received the Warm Home Discount - a one off payment of £135 on their electricity bill, rising to £140 this year.

He added: “It is important to be prepared for winter and I want all Angus constituents to understand what help is available to them, and for their family and friends. Being energy efficient and keeping bills under control is so important.

“Although Scottish Gas has the broadest eligibility criteria of all energy suppliers for its Warm Home Discount, all of them offer a similar scheme and it is worth contacting your electricity supplier to see if you qualify under their scheme.”

Kevin Roxburgh, managing director of Scottish Gas added: “We know that household budgets are tight and many people will be concerned about their winter energy bill. There is help available, and we urge customers to get in touch to find out what advice and support is on offer. It’s free to call us, and we can offer immediate support with bills as well as help with energy efficiency that will have an effect now and in the years to come.”
