Angus MP Mike Weir was recently invited to Brechin High School to discuss with pupils the latest Amnesty International Campaign on the Arms Trade Treaty. Mike discussed the current UK position on Arms as well as inviting questions from the group on the current passage of the treaty, Amnesty are campaigning on.
Commenting on the visit Mr Weir said: “I’d like to thank the School for the invitation to address the pupils of the citizenship group that meet on a Tuesday. It is great to see pupils taking an active interest in matters that not only affect themselves but people the world over. They were keen to make their views clear to me and this can only be encouraged.
The international arms trade is an issue of huge importance given the level of instability in many parts of the world. The current UN negotiations on a comprehensive treaty are due to conclude in July and it is vital that it is as strong as possible to stem the flow of arms to repressive regimes and war zones.”
