MSP seeks flood assurance

Angus North and Mearns SNP MSP, Nigel Don, has questioned Scottish Government Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Climate Change, Stewart Stevenson, over funding for the Brechin Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The scheme does not yet have confirmed statutory consent as the planning application has an objector, but the council are hopeful that the process can be completed in time to be eligible for the current round of grant support provided by the Scottish Government.

During General Question Time on Thursday Mr Don sought assurances from the Minster that if the scheme fell out with this period that funding would still be available.

The Minister assured Mr Don that the Government was willing to talk further once the planning process has been completed.

Commenting Mr Don said:‘‘The Brechin flood alleviation scheme is vital to protect homes and business in the area and I welcome the steps taken by the council to ensure the planning process is completed and submitted to the Government in time for the current round of funding.

‘‘I have discussed the issue with Angus Council and it is clear that they are taking the necessary steps to ensure the application is submitted within the spending review period.

“I am encouraged that the government are keen to consider the application once the proper process has been completed and I look forward to the opportunity of discussing the matter further at that date.
