Members of Angus Council’s communities committee heard about how the measures to reduce the level of rent arrears are working.
A report showed a reduction in rent arrears from 8.29 per cent in March 2014 to 7.95 per cent by July. Members also heard that over 2,400 actions have been taken, including over 770 visits to tenants or ex-tenants, 32 court actions and 10 cases where the council have been awarded a decree by the Court since April 2014.
The council’s housing team continue to take strong action against tenants for non-payment and tenants have been evicted for non-payment of rent. Communities convener, councillor Donald Morrison, said: “Although the council remains committed to giving full support, help and advice with rent payments, we must make it clear once more that rent payment is a priority and failure to pay can lead to sanctions, including eviction.
“We would urge any tenant facing financial challenges to get in touch with us as soon as possible as help and support is available.”
