PRIMARY SCHOOL CHALKS UP 80 YEARS OF SUCCESS
EIGHT decades of success was celebrated last week by past and present pupils of a rural Angus primary that has never been far from the headlines in recent times.
Eassie school opened its doors for an evening of 80th birthday celebrations at a building between Glamis and Newtyle that has twice faced the axe since 2005.
On each occasion, community backing has helped the school survive the threat of closure and displays mounted for the event illustrated the primary's prominent role in local life since 1929.
Old photographs, log books and other artefacts were a talking point for visitors, as well as performances by the current crop of Eassie youngsters.
"In preparation for the celebration, the P4-7 pupils designed posters to advertise the event, created invitations, interviewed past pupils and created displays with old photographs and textbooks so visitors can see how things have changed over the years," Eassie headteacher Carol Andrews said.
"The experience has given the children a great insight into how the school used to be and a chance to appreciate how things have changed over the years."
The milestone birthday is also set to bring a boost for both the school and the fund for a new community hall, with proceeds from a calendar of old photographs to be split between the primary and Eassie, Bevay and Kirkinch Community Association.
Eassie campaigners first sprung into action in 2005, when proposals for a merger with Newtyle were mooted.
The community response led Angus education officials to the view that the primary should remain open, but just three years later it was again under the spotlight due to the condition of the school building and the size of the roll.
Another vigorous - and successful - campaign was then mounted by those who argued that closure of the primary would tear the heart from the community.
