School notes - September 21

BRECHIN High School notes for September 21 are as follows:-

Brechin Arts Festival

This is a busy time for our pupils who are taking part in a range of events organised by the Brechin Arts Festival. We are looking forward to the concert in the school on Tuesday, September 26 at 7.30 pm.

Instrumental Tuition

There are places left for any interested S1 pupils. If you did not get a letter please see Mrs Jackson. We would be particularly interested in recruiting more woodwind and brass pupils.

Duke of Edinburgh – Service

The Tayside Fire and Rescue Service will be running a 10 week Bronze Service Course at Arbroath Fire Station from October 26 to January 25. Places are limited, however if you have still to complete your service then this course would be ideal. Please contact Miss Croall.

Tree of Knowledge Visits September 2006

The Tree of Knowledge will be working with groups of pupils this week at the following times:

S1 Day – Wednesday, September 20;

S4 Day – Thursday September 21.

S5 Day – Friday, September 22.

The focus for the events is on building confidence and self-esteem. With the S4 and S5 days there is an emphasis on examination preparation. There will also be a parents' evening on Thursday, September 21 at 7.30 pm.

Happy Puzzle Club

Following a very successful evening for parents on Tuesday, September 5 and workshops with S1 pupils on Wednesday, September 6, the Maths department are inviting S1 pupils to the Happy Puzzle Club at lunchtime each Thursday with Mr Mills in B9. Beat the teacher will be a regular feature and we cannot wait to win!

Fantastic prizes are available according to Mr Mills so come along and find out what you can win!

Fantasy Football league

It has started again! This year's football league for girls and boys. Who can be the best at picking out their own football team? Prizes can be won all year for only 3.50. There are 20 free footballs to the first entrants. See Miss Glass in C24 for an entry form or bring up the money and you will be rewarded with your online ticket to create your team. Staff are also encouraged to play but free footballs are for pupils only! Deadline is October 2 and see Ms Glass for more details.

Peer Support

Senior pupils took part in a very successful training session to allow them to work as peer supporters to work alongside teachers in class.

Sponsored Read

All pupils in S1 will be encouraged to take part in a sponsored read through the school Library. The money raised will be divided equally between CLIC Sargent and The Roald Dahl Foundation. The money is spent locally, caring for children and young people suffering from cancer, Hodgkin's disease, leukaemia, epilepsy, blood disorders or acquired brain injury.

The sponsored read will take place between Monday, September 18 and Friday, October 20. All monies collected must be handed in to school as soon as possible and no later than Friday, October 27.

Pupils from other classes who would like to take part should contact Mrs Downie or Mrs Clark in the LRC.

Tesco Vouchers

The LRC operates a recycling system for all ink cartridges. We can earn 10 Tesco computers for school vouchers for each cartridge. There is a recycling box in the LRC.

Community Roadshow

The Community Roadshow at Brechin High School on Saturday, September 23 will include a book fair to raise funds for the School Library Resource Centre. There will be activities for younger children i.e. storytelling, colouring competitions, treasure hunt and more. There will be a selection of second hand books for sale at a cost of 50p each. The theme for the fair is Pirates. If any of the younger children attending would like to come in fancy dress we would be pleased to see them. There may even be a prize for the best dressed pirate!
