Second hand car dealers are up to a high standard

Angus Council trading standards officers found high standards amongst the seven second hand car dealers they visited in Brechin, Forfar, Montrose and Arbroath recently.

Of the 68 vehicles examined only two had minor defects which the dealers involved voluntarily agreed to resolve.

One dealer was given verbal advice about checking the history of his vehicles.

Overall trading standards officers were pleased by the apparent high standards set by the second hand car dealers of Angus visited during the project.

Working in partnership with an officer from the road policing unit of Tayside Police, trading standards officers visited the premises to examine second hand cars on sale, check their safety, establish the checks being carried out by the car dealers and look for defects or inconsistencies in displayed mileage and age and if necessary, prevent the sale of unsafe vehicles.

The police officer examined the vehicles on sale and gave this expert opinion as to whether the vehicles were roadworthy.

Angus Council trading standards spokesperson, councillor David May said: “I am very pleased to learn that this exercise has shown that there are high standards amongst the second hand car traders in Angus.

“This will give a large measure of reassurance to those people looking to purchase a vehicle in the county. This is one more example of our successful partnership working with Tayside Police for the benefit of the community and I commend officers in both trading standards and Tayside Police for carrying out this important work.”

Inspector Grant Edward, head of road policing unit in Angus said: “I was very satisfied that no serious offences were detected and am wholly supportive of the overall initiative.

“We propose to continue this joint working to ensure that all vehicles presented for sale are in a roadworthy condition.

“If anyone has concerns about vehicles being sold which they think are not fit for use, they should contact us 0300 1112222, or Angus Council trading standards on 08452 777 778.”
