The latest £250 sponsorship cheque from the Forfar Roof Truss Company Limited will make the summer holidays more fun for local children.
The cheque was presented to Melanie Ford, chairman of the Angus Special Playscheme.
The parent-led group provides respite for carers of children with additional support needs during the school holidays.
It is the only organisation in Angus which provides social, leisure and educational activities during the holidays.
Children aged between five and 18 with profound/complex needs are catered for; there are currently 65 children being supported, with 41 on the waiting list.
Those with autistic spectrum disorders form the largest cohort; the schemes are run out of Arbroath but a bus runs from Forfar. Currently 20 children in the Forfar and Kirriemuir areas are helped with 12 on the waiting list.
In its application the group explained: “We provide a safe, stimulating play environment, offering access to mainstream activities and new experiences. We go to local places of interest and have specialist visitors.
Trips are a valuable part of our service, helping broaden horizons and increase confidence for which we budget around £3000 annually. Some £250 would be used to contribute to our 15 to 18 group’s educational trips to Verdant Works, Dundee (£161), a bespoke tour of Barry Mill, Carnoustie (£380) and Achingarrich Wildlife Centre (£285).”
Applications from the Forfar and kirriemuir area should be made to ‘Forfar Roof Truss Company Sponsorship Project’, c/o Angus County Press, 117-119 Castle Street, Forfar, DD8 3AH. Please include details on how the £250 could be used.
