The Brechin branch of Contact the Elderly has proven such a success that organisers are now hoping to launch a second group.
The current group met one Sunday a month, with volunteer drivers taking up to 12 elderly people who do not have a lot social contact, for afternoon tea. Volunteer hosts provide an afternoon tea once a year for the group.
A normal group would usually consist of around six elderly guests and two or three drivers, but in Brechin there is a waiting listing of elderly people keen to take part.
A spokesperson for the group explained: “To start another group we need a pool of volunteer drivers as not everyone can manage to drive one Sunday afternoon a month. Then we need hosts. Usually hosts will entertain the group once a year to a simple afternoon tea, but some hosts do so twice a year. Drivers must go through disclosure and have a clean driving licence. Hosts need,a downstairs toilet, few stairs and a large teapot.”
The guests and drivers arrive at 2 p.m. and leave at 4 p.m. having enjoyed tea and company.
