A local family will walk from Stonehaven to Skye to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of Lesley Thompson.

Lesley passed away on October 1, 2012 after an eight year battle with cancer.

Her husband, Richard Thompson, explained: “Lesley bore the illness with amazing fortitude and grace, as many with cancer do.

“As a family we received amazing support and assistance from Macmillan Cancer Support throughout Lesley’s illness.

“In the weeks after Lesley’s death, we felt that we could not let her passing go unmarked, nor could we simply send a ‘thank-you’ letter to Macmillan.

“Living in Brechin for 25 years, Lesley loved the history of Scotland, and could trace her family roots to the MacLeods of Skye.

“As a family we felt we needed to challenge ourselves and raise money for Macmillan so others could be helped as we were. Thus, the Dunnottar to Dunvegan Daunder (DD Daunder) was born.”

The DD Daunder will cover 220 miles over two weeks from Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven to Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, starts on Sunday, September 8 and finishing on Saturday, September 21.

“I and my two sons-in-law, Steve Collins and Gerry McAllister, will be doing the whole route but we will be joined by family and friends at various stages along the way,” continued Richard.

“To date we have 14 walkers starting off from Dunnottar Castle on the first day.”

Making the event happen has been possible thanks to the help of Dunecht and Macleod Estates, Collie Dog Campers and a number of campsites along the route.
