WEBSTER'S HGH SCHOOL NOTES, SEPTEMBER 10
THERE was no great fuss but an enormously important opening ceremony took place last Monday when the all weather sports facility at Webster's was officially opened.
Immediately spontaneous football matches were underway and all the pupils declared the surface - the very latest G4 model - as superb with a very realistic feel to it.
Jonathon Watson, a keen S6 footballer at the school and Scotland cap was particularly pleased about the new pitch and he anticipates "a reliable place to play - no matter the weather, you can still get a good pitch to use."
In the evening the floodlights were switched on and the community took over with heavy bookings quickly filling up the Sports Centre diary. This is a marvellous facility for Kirriemuir to have and many thanks are due to everyone who helped make it happen, especially the Kirriemuir Community Sports Association, Angus Council, and Sport Scotland.
Parents as Partners: Another important launch took place on the Tuesday of last week. Angus Provost Ruth Leslie Melville, Councillor Margaret Thomson and members of the Education Directorate were in Webster's library for the unveiling of the Parents as Partners area on Angus Council website.
This will provide Angus parents with vital information regarding their children's education as well as giving links to the particular websites of Angus schools.
Playing a key role in the initiative was WHS parent Mrs Jane Stork and demonstrating what our own school website has to offer was Geography teacher Mrs Catriona Duff. Many thanks to these two and all other individuals who gave their time to make this project possible.
Parent Council AGM: The busy week continued on Wednesday evening with the AGM of the Parent Council taking place in the staffroom. There was a very large and most encouraging turnout of parents and an excellent atmosphere prevailed.
Lots of ideas were discussed and there is now the prospect of an exciting session ahead in which Webster's staff, parents and pupils work ever more closely together.
Dr Alan Weir was re-elected chairman and he stressed that all parents are welcome to come to the first formal meeting of the Parent Council on Monday, September 14, at 7pm.
HMIe Follow-through Report: Published last week was the follow-through report on Webster's 2007 HMIe visit. The original report was very favourable and the inspectors decided they did not need to personally come back to the school to check on progress.
It is still a requirement, however, that the education authority produce an update report for the Inspectorate and for parents. This document is now available on the Angus Council website, on the school's website and a hard copy will be sent to every household at the end of September along with the regular Parents'' Newsletter.
Eggheads Challenge: Last week was extremely testing with the "Eggheads' Challenge" (a take on the BBC programme "Eggheads") taking place in the Assembly hall at lunchtime.
It was the teachers battling fiercely against the pupils in a general knowledge quiz designed to find out whether wisdom really does come with age!
Every day from Tuesday, six pupils from one of the four houses challenged a team of teachers on topics ranging from science to politics. The teachers started off with an easy win of five-one against Clova on Tuesday but were later thwarted by Isla and Prosen pupils who both beat them 4-2 in their respective contests.
Moy pupils rounded off the week with a great 3-1 victory on Friday. Overall, the pupils outclassed the teachers with a score of three-one! Clearly a return match is called for.
Highland dancing Success: Many congratulations to Robyn Hart-Winks who had great success last week at the Cowal Gathering.
She danced her way to victory first in the Scottish Closed Championship for 15-year-olds, followed it up with first place in the Scottish Open Championship for her age group and then crowned it all by winning the World Championship for under 16 year olds. A wonderful few days for Robyn.
