WEBSTER'S SCHOOL NOTES, 4.3.10
Donating Blood Webster's High School welcomed Gwen Fenton, the Donor Services Recruitment and Publicity Officer from the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, as one of the regular guest speakers.
She spoke to some of the sixth years about donating blood, giving them the facts and emphasising the importance of donors. She informed the seniors that only 5% of Scotland is donating blood, at the moment, but with 80,000 operations taking place a month and unpredicted car accidents occurring all the time, the NHS needs 1,000 donations a day.
One donation, she told them, can save three people's lives in just 48 hours. O positive is the most common blood type, then A positive. B negative and AB are the rarest blood groups.
O negative donors, on the other hand, are the most wanted because they are universal donors, meaning that their blood can be given to people of other blood types needing a transfusion. At the moment, Kirriemuir has no blood donating centre due to building work on the hall.
However, there is a centre in Forfar which Gwen Fenton encouraged the sixth years to go to. Mrs. Fenton also asked the seniors to register as donors and she would inform them when the blood donating service is up and running again, in Kirriemuir.
This was a most interesting and informative talk and, hopefully, Webster's pupils will help to increase the percentage of Scots donating in the future.
Webster's Performs at the UK Rock Challenge
Webster's pupils participated in the UK Rock Challenge, held in Webster's Theatre (Arbroath) a couple of weeks ago. The pupils worked avidly on their project for a good few months, creating sets, props and a lively performance which comprised both dance and drama aspects.
Webster's chose an "Alice in Wonderland Theme" and during their practices there seemed to be plenty of cakes, teacups, leaves flying around plus an axe for the red queen, not to mention the Mad Hatter, the Chesire Cat, the playing cards, the White Rabbit and Alice herself, who were acted out by enthusiastic pupils.
On the big day itself Webster's was the first school to perform and everyone agreed they put on a spectacular performance, probably the most entertaining on the night.
Unfortunately certain "boxes needed to be ticked" because of the competition's criteria, and these we had neglected. Webster's finished third overall, won awards for costumes, make-up and music, and learned a lot about how to win next win. Congratulations all who participated in the UK Rock Challenge.
Prelim Exams
In spite of the bad weather the senior school Prelims were completed successfully last Friday. Parents of S5 pupils are reminded that there is a special evening for them on Thursday, March 4, at 7pm. This will be a chance to reflect to the Prelims and to discuss exam preparation over the next few weeks. The meeting will start at 7pm in the school library.
Athletics Evening
A big thank you to the many parents who turned out for the school's special Athletics evening last week. This support was most gratifying.
Driving Ambition
Sixth year pupils participated in a morning entitled "Driving Ambition", which was aimed at improving young people's safety on the roads.
There were two representatives from the fire and rescue department who gave a talk on the effect of crashes, warning pupils that it could take many hours for the fire department to free a trapped victim from their car.
Representatives from Tayside Police gave two presentations: one on car maintenance and the law and another on safety cameras and reactions.
The first was a talk, teaching the pupils how to take care of their car properly and make sure it was roadworthy. The second was a workshop where pupils could try out a simulation which showed reaction times. On top of this, a spokesperson from the DSA talked to pupils about the theory test and what they need to know to pass.
Instructors from BSM, John's Driving School, RSC School of Motoring and 17 Plus Driving School took sixth years that had provisional licences out on free driving lessons to help develop their driving skills. Just before lunch, the pupils were brought back together in the gym hall for a short debrief on the morning to reiterate the message of safe driving.
Certainly, the sixth year pupils have learnt a lot from these presentations and they will be very grateful for this knowledge in years to come. Hopefully, this education will help reduce the amount of accidents including young people on the roads.
