A MEETING takes place tonight (Wednesday) in a bid to gauge the views of local sports clubs on the need for a new all-weather sports facility at Brechin Leisure Centre.
The meeting, which takes place at the centre at 7pm, is an opportunity for those involved in local sports groups to air their views and hopefully carry the debate forward with a view to getting a much needed replacement for the surface, which has bee
n criticised by all and sundry who wish to see a modern artificial sports surface.

Local man, Gregor Laing, said he also hoped to attend the meeting. Gregor has been one of the main campaigners in attempts to get the facility improved upon and replaced and he too is hopeful that at long last, there may be some action.

Kathleen Hutchison, Facilities Manager, at the centre said: "We have phoned out and sent out invitations and users groups have been invited. A few people are unable to make and a pity so all these user groups are invited, The Attic have also been asked to send someone along and we are hopeful of a very good turn out. As with all these thing, you will always have one or two people who are unable to attend.

" As far as invited are concerned, we have sent invitations to the Brechin Thistles Hockey Club, Brechin City Youths, Brechin High School Athletics Club, Hudsons and Park Bar football teams, JogScotland, Brechin Cricket Club and Sports Development at Angus Council, have all been invited as have representatives from The Attic, Brechin Vics Junior FC, Forfar Farmington and Councillors Bob Myles, Mairi Evans, sadly the Provost is unable to attend.

"Archie Dick the Recreation Manager for Sports and Countryside Services with Angus Council will also be in attendance. We have an agenda drawn up and I am working on a presentation at the moment and we have some questions which will put to the user groups and hopefully get some feedback."

Ironically, the Brechin meeting comes just a few days after the provision of new sports facilities at Webster's High took a major leap forward. The facilities there, for use by the school and the wider community of Kirriemuir, are to receive a bumper £250,000 grant from sportscotland.

For the past five years, Angus Council has been working in partnership with the Kirriemuir Community Sports Association to provide an all-weather pitch and changing facilities on the playing fields of Webster's High School.

Now, with the confirmation of funding of £250,000 from sportscotland, to complement investment by Angus Council, and a fund-raising drive by the Kirriemuir Community Sports Association (KCSA), preliminary work can now start on the project.

It is estimated this sports element of the project will cost £900,000 and will be part of the larger scheme to extend Webster's High School.
