Battling Bolag end year on high note
Brechin Bolag AFC 2, Victoria 1 -The Bolag showed great determination to claim another three points on Sunday after they overcame a quagmire of a pitch to go second top of the league.
Earlier in the season the Bolag dominated away to Victoria but lost 2-1. This time the roles were reversed - and then some! For an hour the Forfar side dominated proceedings and on another day they would have won. But it was a day when the ball would just not go in for them thanks to a mixture of resolute defending, good goalkeeping from Trevor Clark and, for once, or should that be three times, the woodwork.
The Brechiners went into the game full of confidence on the back of a winning run and after looking the better side took a ninth minute lead when Forbes and McDonald combined to release Craig Laing whose early shot caught out the keeper.
Following more pressure the home side looked on easy street when Barry Forbes scored a belter high into the net from 25 yards to make it 2-0 inside 21 minutes.
The Victoria could have chucked it at this point but instead started to play the best football the Brechin side have faced all season. Clark was forced into a couple of good saves but when David Lindsay conceded a penalty for a foul in the area on 31 minutes he was beaten from the spot to reduce the deficit.
It was back to the wall time now for the Bolag. Injuries to McIntosh and Laing certainly upset the rythmn but boy did the Bolag dig in and try to win the match. The midfield basically became defenders; debutant Kevin MacAulay and Barry Forbes were superb in the middle of a crowded park but everyone put in a turn to keep the Victoria out.
The ref added over four minutes of injury time at the end of the second-half - all of which was spent round Trevor Clark's goalmouth but somehow the home side held on to gain a little poetic justice for the earlier clash between the sides.
This ends the Bolag's year as they have a free week and the chance to sample a little early Christmas spirit this Saturday night before the league shuts down until January 7.
The club would like to wish all the readers who follow their fortunes, their supporters and sponsors a very happy Christmas and, for themselves, a bit of silver in the New Year!
