Bolag see off Tay Hearts in fine form

Brechin Bolag AFC 3, Tay Hearts 0 - Brechin Bolag are through to the third round of the Tayside Cup after a much improved performance against Dundee side Tay Hearts a week ago.

It was welcome return to form for the Bolag, who had suffered a couple of league defeats recently. There was a desire and will to win which had been missing of late.

However, while the Bolag were playing with a more determined edge, they didn't make things easy for themselves and hit the woodwork on several occasions when they were just 1-0 up.

The home side quickly got into their stride from kick-off and, following early pressure, Barry McDonald fired in a fine strike after seven minutes to put the Bolag in front.

Gordon McFarlane's long throw-ins were causing problems for the visitors and were not being dealt with. One such dead ball situation saw a Barry Forbes header struck the bar and another saw a Ryan McIntosh effort cleared off the line.

On 29 minutes some superb play resulted in Liam Middleton running clear. His shot beat the keeper but came back off the post and led to the mother of all goal-line stramashes in which Laing, Middleton and Forbes all saw shots blocked on the line.

The Bolag were then given a warning when Euan Clark did well to turn a rare shot round the post. At the other end Andy Rosie's pass found Laing whose shot again found the woodwork, but not the net.

Into the second half and Tay Hearts had an early spell of pressure without really threatening the rearguard of Wilson, Lindsay and McFarlane.

Gradually things returned to business as usual and on the hour Richard Sellar's corner was headed against the post by Laing. A bit of panic was setting in on the sidelines, but happily Craig Laing's low shot finally beat the Tay Hearts keeper and hit the net on 72 minutes.

Six minutes later it was game, set and match when Ernie Clark and Barry Forbes combined to set up Liam Middleton for number three.

Knowing it was all over, the Tay hearts players now indulged in a bit of rough stuff and found themselves down to ten men just before the final whistle when a previously booked player ploughed into Ernie Clark and left the ref with no choice but to send him off.

Bolag - E. Clark, D. Lindsay, B. McDonald, G. McFarlane, A. Wilson, B. Forbes (B. Meston), L. Middleton, R. Sellar (S. Clark), A. Rosie, C. Laing (E. Clark), R. McIntosh.
