Bolag forced to dig deep to overcome Delsons

Delsons 2, Brechin Bolag AFC 3 - The Bolag are through to the quarter finals of the Roof Truss Trophy after they overcame mudbath conditions to edge out Delsons in a hard fought match on Sunday.

Delsons are a new team to the league and look like running away with the second division title and on Sunday gave the Bolag a real stern test.

Early doors the game was quite even, but on 12 minutes the home side took the lead with a strike from 25 yards that somehow found the net.

The Brechiners responded well to the setback and started to play some really good stuff - especially considering the state of the pitch - and equalised in 20 minutes when Ryan McIntosh's pass found Liam Middleton, whose low drive was turned into the net by Craig Laing.

After this came some of the Bolag's best football of the season, but without any reward as Laing saw an effort cleared off the line and Andy Rosie's shot struck the bar.

If it was a boxing match it might have been stopped but Delsons came off the ropes to stun the Bolag with a headed goal from a corner right on half time.

Delsons are well organised and they set about keeping what they had as they started playing down the clock early in the second half. Long range shots from Sellars and McIntosh were the Bolag's best efforts, then in 65 minutes a defence splitting pass by Richard Sellar left Craig Laing with a free run in on goal and the Bolag's top scorer showed composure to slot home the equaliser.

As time wore on the unwanted penalty shoot out was looking a possibility, but in 81 minutes the Bolag took the lead for the first time with a quality goal.

Subs Kevin Rennie and Ernie Clark were both involved when Rennie played the ball out right to Clark from halfway, and he took off and sent a low cross into the area. Laing dummied the ball and Rennie fired the ball past Delsons helpless keeper.

Delsons were not going to give up easily though, and were soon putting the pressure on, but Lindsay, McDonald and an injured Gordon McFarlane were keeping them out and Forbes showed his mettle when he put his head in the way of a driven free kick. A long run from deep by Ernie Clark which ended with Delsons keeper turning his shot around the post helped to ease the tension and the ref blew for full time.

The win has handed Bolag a home draw in the quarters against this week's league opponents Victoria. With the Bolag hoping for a free week on the 17th, this Sunday's game will be their last of 2006 and a win over Victoria will put them second top of the first division.

Further cup draws have seen the Bolag away to Millgate in the quarter finals of the league cup and a cracker of a first division tie at home to old foes the Strathmore.

For Sunday players should meet at 10.15am at the public park.

Bolag - T. Clark, D. Lindsay, B. McDonald, McFarlane, A. Wilson (K. Rennie), B. Forbes, L. Middleton, R. Sellar, A. Rosie (E. Clark), C. Laing, R. McIntosh (B. Meston).
