Bolag oust holders on way to cup final

Kirrie Thistle SC 1, Brechin Bolag AFC 3 - The Bolag are through to the League Cup final where they await the winners of the Delsons versus Strathmore semi-final after a really good team performance on Sunday.

The pitch in Kirrie was not surprisingly extremely heavy which made for tough going. The Bolag began well enough but in ten minutes conceded a soft penalty which thankfully was blasted high over Trevor Clark's crossbar although he will tell you he had it covered anyway!

The warning was not needed and when a Kirrie free-kick broke to the edge of the box a low shot nestled into the bottom corner of the net to give the home side the lead in 17 minutes.

The Bolag applied lots of pressure after this and when Ryan McIntosh won a tackle and passed to Michael Simms, the striker tuned his man and shot home the equaliser in 26 minutes.

Little was seen of the home side in an attacking sense as the Bolag kept up the pressure with the best chance falling to Craig Laing who ran clear from a superb McFarlane througn ball but shot wide.

Into the second half and it was more of the same as the ball would not go in with Wolfie Hamilton twice passing up opportunites.

With the dreaded penalty shoot out beginning to creep into minds the Bolag finally took the lead in 70 minutes when a MacFarlane cross was head flicked past the keeper by Michael Simms.

It was one way traffic but good saves from Middleton and MacDonald kept the home side in it. In 79 minutes however a good passing move involving Rennie and MacAulay put Craig Laing in and he drew the keeper before cutting the ball back to Simms to complete a fine hat-trick for the recently returned striker.

Kirrie to their credit were not giving up on the trophy they won last year without a fight and won countless corners in the last ten minutes and from one Clark made a super save to tip a shot over the bar to ease any nerves and the Bolag had done enough to secure a cup final place.

A spokesperson commented: "There is no let up for the Bolag who thought they might have a free week but no instead it is the quarter final of the Forfar Roof Truss trophy at home to Victoria.

"Not an easy tie but a winnable one none the less for the Brechiners who if they will suceed will be eyeing up two cup finals to end the season. The first of which will take place at Forfar Athletic's Station Park on Sunday, April 15 with an 11am kick off.

"Talking of finals, the Bolag wish the Stables all the best in their first final in the Montrose League on Sunday. For the Bolag, players meet at the park on Sunday at 9.45am. Kick off is at 10.30am."

Team: T. Clark, B. MacDonald, D. Lindsay, W. Hamilton, A. Wilson , G. McFarlane, L. Middleton, B. Forbes (K. MacAulay), M. Simms (E.Clark), C. Laing, R. McIntosh (K. Rennie).
