Brechin boss hails midfield ball winner
BRECHIN City manager Jim Duffy hailed the contribution of midfield man, Gary Fusco, after his side's three-nil trouncing of Clyde at Broadwood on Saturday.
And, far from going over-board about the midfield man's performance, Duffy hit the nail on the ginger head, in regard of the former Cowdenbeath man's display as City picked up their first ever win at Broadwood.
"Gary Fusco was tremendous for us," commented the boss. "He broke up the play won tackle after tackle and generally stamped his authority all over the game.
"He finished it off by scoring a goal of great quality from 25 yards, which gave the goalkeeper no chance and I can't speak highly enough of him.
"It was the sort of performance I am looking for from him week in and week out.
"There were signs, too, that Kevin Byers was getting back to something like his old self.
"Kevin was unfortunate on a couple of occasions to add to the score and, if we can get him back at his best, he has the attributes of playing a big role for us.
"Rory McAllister scored a goal of sublime quality and it was one of three wonderful goals that we scored.
"Gary and Mark Docherty's goals also fell into the top notch category. Both showed a lot of composure and great finishes. For Rory's, his touch and finish were sublime, it was a very clever goal.
"I said to the players after the game that, at times, we reached the sort of level we need to produce every week and that's what we are looking for - consistency."
The manager also revealed that, while it was a tough decision in leaving out young goalkeeper, David Scott, it was one that had to be taken.
"It would have been a sore one for David to take, but his reaction was magnificent and I think it spoke volumes for him.
"He recognises that, while he came in and played one outstanding game, he is competing with a guy who had been consistently excellent for this club over the past two or three years.
"However, it also means our competition there is increased as Craig is only too well aware, having seen Davie in action at Ayr, that he faces a fight to keep his place.
"I felt Alex Walker, our loan signing from Greenock Morton, also performed well. What you are looking for from a centre half in his first game is for him to clear his lines, communicate with his team mates and, if he can, help you to a clean sheet. Alex ticked all three boxes well.
"There is a great desire amongst the players at present and, with two home games coming up, this presents us with a great opportunity to get amongst the sides at the top of the division, if we can show the same levels of consistency."
On the transfer front, the Brechin manager said he would still like to strengthen the side before the window closes.
"I have that option available to me and we will see how things transpire.
"Ideally, we would like to bring in another player who can play middle to front and we will be making efforts on that front. However, there is nothing imminent."
One player who could be leaving Glebe Park, however, is midfield man Ian Nimmo.
County neighbours Arbroath tabled an offer for the former Ipswich Town player at the weekend.
However, the initial offer didn't meet City's valuation and, at the time of going to press, City are waiting to see if the Red Lichties come back with an improved deal.
This Saturday sees Duffy's men take on Stenhousemuir, who have been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past week or so.
However, Duffy says his side must simply concentrate on the job in hand.
"There is a great opportunity for us in the next couple of months and we can do ourselves a favour by ensuring we remain consistent and keep our recent good form up.
"If we are consistent, and bear in mind there have only been two or three games this season when I have felt we haven't been up to the level we require, I will be happy."
