Champs keep Bolag out
FC Porty 2, Brechin Bolag AFC 1 - Sundays are turning into groundhog day for the Bolag of late after they once again suffered a one goal defeat at the weekend, this time at the hands of League Champions FC Porty.
If you took away the first ten minutes the Brechin side totally dominated the game and, in a repeat of their previous game, gave one of their best performances of the campaign to date.
The Arbroath side needed nothing less than three points to keep up their title challenge and somehow managed it.
After a long delay waiting for the referee to turn up the Porty made the perfect start when they capitalised on some slack Bolag defending to go a goal ahead with just two played.
Kevin Rennie then had a great chance to equalise right away but shot straight at the keeper when clean through.
The Porty then doubled their lead with a similar effort to the first on nine minutes and a thumping looked to be on the cards.
This was not to be the case though and the Bolag continued to create chances - Craig Lockhart was the latest to have a go when he shot over from close range and then fired a super volley which skimmed the cross bar.
The Bolag then went agonisingly close to halving the deficit when a Liam Middleton run and shot produced the save of the match from Porty's keeper, who was on form.
But a Bolag goal was too long in coming. On 36 minutes a Rennie inswinging corner prompted a Porty defender to throw his arms up and palm the ball away. He was very fortunate to only be yellow carded for his troubles.
From the spot kick Michael Simms put the keeper the wrong way to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Without doubt the home side were rocking up to half time and it continued into the second half.
It was virtually one way traffic towards the Porty goalkeeper but the Bolag could not get the ball past him and were guilty of maybe passing the ball too much instead of having a go.
On 70 minutes the home side survived a big shout for a second penalty when a Rennie corner was headed clear and McFarlane fired a shot in which looked to be cleared off the line by the arm of a defender. But the ref didn't give it and Porty's lead survived.
Porty had soon also survived an almighty goal mouth scramble, and then a run and shot from Craig Laing was pushed round the post as the Bolag pushed on.
Another effort was fired straight at the keeper and a series of corners failed to find a shot or header on target. At the death Trevor Clark the Bolag goalie was at the other end but for all the Bolag's effort no goal came and the Porty held on for what could be a superb three points for them.
This Sunday it's a real big one for the Bolag when they go to Kirrie to play in the semi-final of the League Cup.
It's an action replay of last year's semi when Kirrie SC defeated the Bolag 5-4 on penalties after a two-all draw.
Despite their poor run the Brechiners feel they can reach the final for the second time in three seasons.
For Sunday players should meet at St Ninians Square at 9.30am for a 10.30am kick off. Training is indoors at the Leisure Centre at 6pm on Thursday.
Team - T. Clark, D. Lindsay, B. McDonald, G. McFarlane, A. Wilson (K. MacAulay), W. Hamilton, L. Middleton, K. Rennie, M. Simms, E. Clark (K. Middleton), C. Lockhart (C. Laing).
