Community call as City provide value for money
BRECHIN City manager Jim Duffy feels his players are doing more than enough to give his chance a stab at promotion to the first division.
Now the Brechin manager feels its time for the local community to do the same and repay them by backing their local football team.
Duffy said the club deserves far greater backing from the local community, while also recognising that, in the present economic climate, football could well be the furthest thing from people's minds.
He said: "We have to recognise the fact that our players are putting an awful lot of hard work and sheer graft and effort into their matches just now and all we are really asking for is for that effort and commitment to be backed by the local community.
"If you have watched the last two matches at Glebe Park you would have had the opportunity to witness eight goals and that in itself, I believe, represents excellent value for money.
"We have had two very exciting and, more importantly, entertaining games at Glebe Park in the last two weeks and I just feel that, even if all our adult supporters could bring along another supporter with them, then it would make such a difference, not just to the team, but to the club as a whole.
"The match against Alloa was a terrific advert for the second division. And on Saturday, the players showed that the commitment from them to this club is there by displaying the character they did to come back and win the game.
"However, we need a little bit more support from the community to come out and get behind the players.
"So I would urge all our fans, whether its bringing along to the next home game their sons, daughters, grannies, grandads or next door neighbours - just do it, because we have a group of lads here who are working very hard to give the community of Brechin something to shout about and be proud of - and they deserve more backing.
"We recognise that money is very tight for a lot of people just now and hard decisions often have to be made.
"However, all we are asking is you give Brechin City a chance - come along and support your local side and we will try every week to go out and entertain you whenever possible.
"People will be surprised how good the standard can be. I was surprised myself, having worked at this level for the first time.
"These lads have a good blend of youth and experience and we are looking to take the club forward. We now have a few options and once we get everyone back fit, the squad will get stronger.
"On Saturday, I watched us create a host of chances, play some terrific football and the movement of our front two Rory and Charlie was different class at times.
"We perhaps missed a load of chances, but, at the same time, home and away we are creating chances and when we take them there's every chance we could give some one a real doing!
"How we didn't come off at half-time well in front we will never know. Sometimes you need a wee break when the ball bobbles in front of you or a shot's hooked off the line.
"Also their goalkeeper has been in inspired form and throughout the first half I think Craig Nelson had one save to make.
"For a spell it looked as if it was going to be one of those days, when you dominate possession, create umpteen chances and let yourself down by not sticking them away.
"However, all credit to my players, once again they worked their socks off and the second goal has got us back on top of the game again and then it looked like we had the impetus back.
"The only spell when I felt we were flat was the first 20 minutes of the second half and it's at that stage of the game, you need to get your supporters behind you - and the more supporters the better!
"Over the 90 minutes we deserved it because we created so many chances."
City are now sitting pretty in second top slot in the Scottish second division - and they will get the chance to consolidate that position when, this Saturday, they head to Fife to take on a Cowdenbeath side tucked away a point behind them in the race for a promotion paay-off slot.
