CUP FINAL HEARTACHE FOR BOLAG

Bolag 2, Strathmore 5 - The Bolag gave their all on Sunday at Station Park in the League Cup final but things did not go their way at all.

The scoreline flattered Strathmore but at the end of the day they deserved the victory in the seering heat of Forfar.

The Brechiners went into the game confidently but within ten minutes the season long problem of hitting the woodwork instead of the net was again evident as firstly Ernie Clark then Michael Simms seen good efforts rebounded off the post.

Strathmore then stunned the Bolag with a great solo goal from a player who twisted and turned one way then the other before firing home from 18 yards.

A first tackle by Andy Rosie resulted in him being booked by a ref who appeared to allow a Strathmore player at least two such challenges before booking him. Worse followed for Andy as an ankle injury in 25 minutes seen him being replaced by Richard Sellar.

It was end to end stuff fitting of the surroundings and in 38 minutes Gordon McFarlane passed to Ernie Clark who raced clear and shot home a deserved equaliser. The equaliser, however, was short lived as a player was allowed too much room to run and get in a shot which slipped under Craig Lockhart and into the net two mnutes later.

The game was high octane stuff and in stoppage time of the first half, as Alan Wilson put it, "the pantomine season arrived."

Barry Forbes and a Strathmore player had a disagreement in the centre circle, it was six of one and half a dozen of the other, nothing much happened but Forfar referee Iain Cooper decided to send off Forbes and not even talk to the Strathmore player.

Two yellow cards had been the the expected result but no and chaos ensued all over.

The Bolag manager left the referee in no doubt what he and all the Brechiners thought of his decision and was ordered from the dugout when he re-iterated what he thought.

This decision clearly put Strathmore in pole position as Forbes is a big player for the Bolag.

Worse followed at the start of the second half as a fine strike flew into the net to make it 3-1 for the league champions. The heads could have went down but no, the Bolag went straight up the park and when Ryan McIntosh's shot spun off a leg and into the air Michael Simms headed the ball into the net.

With the Bolag pushing for an equaliser the Strathmore hit superbly on the break and scored a fourth.

Simms and McIntosh had run themselves into the ground and were replaced by MacAulay and Rennie. Still the Bolag drove on with Craig Laing superb but in 72 minutes came another flashpoint when a challenge by Kevin MacAulay which looked bad but resulted in little damage to their player was deemed worthy of a red card. So it was now nine men against eleven but still the Bolag looked as likely to score as Strathmore.

With ten minutes to go came an amazing spell as firstly Liam Middleton's shot was superbly saved. Craig Laing then burst into the box but his shot hit the inside of the post but stayed out, Clark's shot was cleared off the line then Kevin Rennie seen his effort again rebound from the woodwork. It was not to be the Bolags day as Strathie broke away and another fine finish in 88 minutes put a rather flattening look on the scoreline for the Forfar side.

A spokesman said:"We are all disappointed with the way things turned out. The players gave their all but the sending off of Barry Forbes effected us.

"I might be wrong but a Forfar referee, refereeing a Forfar side in a cup final in Forfar can't be right. Anyway congratulations to Strathmore and thanks to all our supporters who came along to watch."

After the final the Bolag held a presentation afternoon with the winners as follows; Top Scorer - Craig Laing, Players Player of the Year - Barry McDonald, Player of the Year - Barry McDonald, Cup Final Man of the Match - Craig Laing.
