Duffy recruits former team-mate of McFadden

BRECHIN City manager Jim Duffy will complete the signing later this week of Barry Tulloch - an amateur player who has been playing for Harestones Amateurs, but who once played alongside one of Scotland's biggest names of the football world.

Tulloch started his senior career with Motherwell and played in the same Fir Park youth team as James McFadden and Stephen Pearson.

He has also had spells with Dumbarton and Cowdenbeath and, more recently, has played in Australia and the USA, before coming back to Scotland.

Tulloch, who is six feet one inches tall, plays as the manager described it "on the left side of the field" and the City gaffer is hopeful he will be able to have the player challenging for a place in his first team squad once the administrative formalities have been taken care of.

"Barry was recommended to me and we have had him in training with us since December," said Duffy.

"We had hoped to play him in a couple of closed doors games.

"However, obviously with the weather being the way it has been, we have only managed to arrange one of these and Barry did very well in it.

"We played Stranraer and he took the eye, as he has done at a number of our recent training sessions.

"Don't think for a minute that we are signing a big, tall player who gets on the end of crosses at the far post.

"For his height, Barry is a very naturally gifted footballer and someone who, we hope, can play an important role for us in the weeks ahead.

"If a player has ability it doesn't matter what level of the game he is playing at, it will shine through and we are hopeful that Barry will make an impression on everyone at Glebe Park."

Saturday's one-nil win at Dumbarton pleased the manager, especially with the majority of City's fellow promotion contenders dropping points.

"I thought we were a bit rusty in the first half and looked as if the constant stop-start nature of the season had effected us a bit.

"However, there was an improvement in the second half and once we scored the goal I felt we were relatively comfortable.

"An area of the game that gets far too little in the way of praise is defending and our back four were excellent on Saturday.

"While we were allowing too many crosses into our box, I felt we defended them very well and the entire back four were magnificent.

"Dumbarton had a lot of the ball, but Craig (Nelson) has only had one real save to make in the entire game and I think that only underlines how well the lads in front of him did.

"It was good to see Kevin Byers getting on the score-sheet again. Kevin and the likes of Mark Docherty and Gary Fusco have popped up with goals in recent weeks to take a bit of the onus off Rory and Charlie and we need more of that from the midfield.

"There was very little in the game and, while they had a shout for a penalty, it looked like Richard Walker clearly played the ball first when he tackled Ross Clark. It's a great three points to pick up, as it's never easy to win at Dumbarton."

At the time of going to press on Tuesday, Brechin City were preparing to host Stirling Albion that same evening.

Speaking ahead ofg the game, Duffy said his players were relishing the six-pointer - a side with the best away record in the second division taking on the side with the best home record.

"Our players are working really hard just now and they want to maintain our present form." he concluded.

Following the midweek game, City will be at home again on Saturday, when near-neighbours Arbroath are in town for the latest derby.
