Duffy quits Brechin

BRECHIN City FC is on the lookout for a new manager after Jim Duffy quit the post.

The former Dundee, Morton and Partick Thistle defender handed in his resignation on Wednesday after leading Brechin to their second promotion play-off spot in as many seasons.

Despite defeating First Division Airdrie United both home and away in the first round of the play-offs this season, Duffy's charges couldn't quite leap the last hurdle, crashing to a 3-0 defeat to Cowdenbeath in the second leg of the final, having drawn the first 0-0.

Duffy, who replaced Michael O'Neill in January 2009, said he was pleased by what he managed to achieve at the club, but felt the time was right to move on.

He said: "I feel it is time for me to have a fresh challenge. I thought it was important to give Brechin time to get someone else in early so they could build their own side and prepare for the new season.

"It's the first time I've managed at a part-time club and it has been an education.

"I had a great relationship with the chairman and the vice-chair, Martin Smith and I wanted to let them know as early as possible.

"There's nine players signed up for the new season, so there's a good nucleus there for a new manager to work from."

Duffy paid tribute to the players who helped take the club to within 90 minutes of First Division football next season.

He said: "I had a great rapport with the players at Brechin and thoroughly enjoyed working with them.

"I think the players had a really good season, but when you're working with a small squad you need an element of fortune and they were a fraction away from having a remarkable season.

"Unfortunately, we had three of our most important players, Craig Nelson, Neil Janczyk and Willie Dyer out for the final game. While it would have been interesting to see how different the game would have been had Cowdenbeath been missing three of their top players, they were the better side on the day.

"But from my point of view my players were excellent. They demonstrated unbelievable commitment and that's something that every manager wants from their players."

Partly influencing Jim's decision to leave Glebe Park was the death of his father last weekend after a long battle with cancer.

The former Falkirk, Dundee and Hibs manager will attend his father's funeral tomorrow before even considering his next step in the game.

Brechin chairman Ken Ferguson, said: "We are pleased and honoured to have had Jim Duffy as Manager of Brechin City FC. We have enjoyed a couple of good seasons, reaching a play off semi final in the first year and latterly reaching the club's first ever First Division play-off final.

"Jim moves on with our best wishes, he is leaving the club in a good shape with a strong nucleus of players committed to the new season and beyond.

"We must now turn our attention to the search for a new manager, with time at an essence we would ask any interested parties to apply to the secretary at secretary@brechincityfc.com."
