Riverside u-13s 3
Brechin u-13s 3
This match was played at Dundee waterfront in what could only be described as anti football conditions with an extremely strong wind howling down the pitch and it was telling that this would very much be a game of two halves.
The first half was played with Brechin facing the wind and Riverside took advantage of this, going two goals ahead after the wind had caused problems for the home defence. Brechin struggled to get out of their own half during that first period however battled hard to keep the deficit to two at the interval.
Half-time: Riverside 2, Brechin 0.
The second half was in stark contrast to the first with Brechin now controlling the game and Riverside toiling to break out.
From the start of the half Brechin piled pressure onto the Riverside defence and keeper and only bad luck and the woodwork prevented an early goal. As the game wore on Brechin moved to a back three, pushing another striker on and this immediately paid off when a free kick by Kieran Longmuir was headed high into the air by a Riverside defender and the ball sailed over the keeper into the net to give Brechin some momentum.
The equaliser arrived soon after when a wicked inswinging corner by Connor Scott was met at the back post by James Williamson who turned the ball in.
Brechin continued to press looking for the winner and perhaps over committed as Riverside broke forward and scored to retake the lead with less than two minutes to play.
The Brechin players’ heads didn’t drop and they showed great resolve, winning another free kick in the last minute. Again it was delivered by Longmuir who found the onrushing Calum McKelvie who nodded the ball in at the back post to give Brechin a 3-3 draw.
