Brechin Golf Club set to bring footgolf to Angus

The fastest-growing sport in the UK is coming to Angus as Brechin Golf Club get set to launch their footgolf programme.

The hybrid sport of footgolf is just what it sounds like - golf, with a football.

Players try to kick a size five football into a hole, just like the rules of golf.

It’s rollocking good fun and Brechin’s club pro Stephen Rennie is confident it will prove to be a roaring success.

He said: “It’s the fastest-growing sport in the UK and probably one of the fastest in the world to be fair, it’s huge in America already. You’re kicking a football on a golf course essentially. You kick off as you would a golfer, you take turns as you would a golfer.

“The hole is equivalent size and ratio as the golf ball is to the hole. It’s enough to accommodate a size five ball going into the hole and dropping down.

“We want to get more kids involved in the club and get them up here as members, if people take up footgolf they might want to take up golf as well.

“There’s only about four courses in Scotland but it will grow.”

The club is hosting an open day this Friday for local schoolchildren to head along and try the sport out, with a public open day on Sunday.

“We’ve got a minibus sorted to ship a dozen kids from the primary school and a dozen from the high school to get up and try the sport, and hopefully they spread the word on how fun it is.”
